Chile's wines have gained a global reputation and are well-liked by European connoisseurs, too. Surely it would be a crime not to pay a visit to the fonts of such 'fine juices' while on holiday in Chile, wouldn’t it?
Some of the most famous vineyards in the country are located in the Colchagua Valley south of Santiago. Experts click one's tongue when they hear the following names: Bisquertt, Casa Silva, Casa Lapostolle, Cono Sur, Jacques & François Lurton, Laura Hartwig, Montes, MontGras, Selentia, Viu Manent. The current vintage grapes are maturing in those cellars. All around this extensive, sun-kissed valley, the grapes for the next highly anticipated harvest thrive.
The illustrious atmosphere of the Tren del Vino, an old, restored saloon train, that trails through the valley at a leisurely pace every Saturday, lets you enjoy the special appeal of this beautiful wine route. The carriages and the restaurant car with their distinguished décor were made in Germany and were exported to Chile in the 1920s. Naturally you will be able to taste some of the good wines of the Colchagua Valley onboard the Tren del Vino!
Having arrived in Santa Cruz, you'll learn more about Chile's preferred vine varieties and the revolution in viticulture during the last 15 years on guided tours. Here old and new live side by side: Traditional Hacienda villas sit next to ultra-modern high-tech plants, and visitors are driven through wine fields with highly refined irrigation plants in quaint horse carriages. Obviously, good food is a must on this trip, so that you’re able to discover the characteristic aromas and the local flavour of the Colchagua Valley. And of course, you can opt to take some of the best wines home with you!
In addition to the above, the Colchagua Valley is host to an anthropological history museum that's well worth seeing and a colonial hacienda preserved in its original state. Santa Cruz, the major town in this valley, boasts one of the top hotels in the country, furnished in the very best of taste, the Hotel Santa Cruz Plaza.
