National Park Torres del Paine

The Natural Wonder of Patagonia

Torres del Paine is considered by many to be Latin America's finest national park and visitors experience an unforgettable feeling of intimacy with nature. Suddenly, in the midst of the greyish-brown Pampa, 2,000 m high granite peaks shoot up and reach towards the sky, crowned by whimsical granite spikes and fingers: the famous and distinguished "torres" (towers) and “cuernos” (horns). Mighty glaciers push off the continental ice field surrounded by a string of icy-grey, aquamarine, emerald and turquoise lakes. At every step one is bound to come across elegant Guanakos (a type of llama), fast Nandus (ostriches) or see condors circling above, for ever on the alert.

This special trip allows you to explore the most beautiful parts of this park and its surrounds in just two days. A public transport bus takes you from Punta Arenas (from city centre or airport) to Puerto Natales, a pretty village at the Ultima Esperanza Fjord, which meanders all the way from the Pacific, stretching far inland. After an overnight stay in a hotel a small bus takes us on a guided tour around the national park. On the way the short detour to the famous cave of the prehistoric animal, Mylodon, is a must. Finally, we reach the massif of the Torres del Paine, which has been declared a World Biosphere Reserve, and with good reason, too. We visit several lakes dotted around the park, from where ever-changing fantastic views onto the mountains emerge. We refuel at the rustic Hostería Las Torres, where we have lunch. Gigantic ice blocks float in the Lago Grey, which are cast offs from a glacier by the same name. At last we leave to return to our hotel in Puerto Natales, filled with unforgettable impressions.

The next day’s programme holds another highly attractive excursion: a boat-trip on the “Fjord of Last Hope” sails past sea lion rookeries and cormorant colonies to the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers, whose blue spikes jut out into the fjord. The Serrano Glacier has formed a small lagoon where blue ice blocks are afloat, creating a mesmerising spectacle. On our return the ship docks at the old sheep farm Estancia Perales, where a typical Patagonian lunch is served.
