This attractive boat trip by Navimag sails right across the Patagonian fjords.
The car-ferry Evangelistas operates throughout the year every Monday from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales, which is the general point of departure for touring the Torres-del-Paine national park (returns Fridays). The boat trip substitutes a missing land connection: On the Chilean side the way to the south is blocked by the Patagonian icefield.
The journey takes three days and leads past snow-capped Andean peaks, across the 'Gulf of Penas' and through narrow channels fringed by thick cloud forests, where once Kawesqar Indians roamed in fragile wooden canoes. The boat stops at the native settlement Puerto Edén. Since the holiday season 2005/2006 the ship travelling the south route also sails past the gigantic Pio XI Glacier that juts into the sea from the Southern Patagonian Icefield, surrounded by floating sheets of ice. On the north route the Amalia Glacier is headed for (both trips are only possible in the High Season from November to March).
The Evangelistas offers cabins for 2 and 4 persons as well as communal dormitories with bunk beds.
