Cruce de Lagos

Explore the Andes by boat

How is that possible, to cross the Andes by waterway? It's quite simple: with the original tour "Cruce de Lagos" that has long been a classic of the Chile-tourism programmes.

The combined boat/bus tour starts at the port of Puerto Montt or optionally in the neighbouring tourist resort of Puerto Varas. The tour connects the Chilean and Argentinean lake districts and leads through two densely forested national parks, across three mountain lakes, passing majestic volcanoes on the way.

First the bus takes you along the embankment of the gigantic lake Llanquihue to the National Park Vicente Pérez Rosales. A trip to the cascades of the Petrohué river is a must. After that it's 'all aboard' a catamaran, sailing across Lago Todos Los Santos, an extensive lake surrounded by rainforests and passing three mighty volcanoes: Osorno, Puntiagudo and Tronador.

On the other side of the lake the catamaran docks at the rainforest village Peulla. Travellers short of time can take the same boat back, safe in the knowledge that with this partial section they will already have gained a good impression of this wild Andean landscape.

A homely hotel in Peulla, right in the middle of unadulterated nature, tempts you to stop and embark on some hiking and riding tours. The Andean cruise then continues by bus on a low-level border path to Argentina, presenting stunning views along the way. From there a ship takes you across the Lago Frías.

Disembark on the other side, where a short bus ride takes you to the nearby Puerto Blest. Another boat trip sails across the Lago Nahuel Huapi, before a last bus finally takes you to the pretty tourist resort of Bariloche.

The tour is offered all year round, in the summer as a day trip and in the winter with an overnight stay in the Hotel Peulla.
