Observatories direct their eyes towards the clear sky, tourists and penguins frolic on the beaches, and in green, sun-baked valleys wine and legends flourish.
In the Small North the desert gradually turns into a semi-desert, pillars of cacti guard the slopes, rivers and streams make their way to the ocean. Clear, star-lit nights attract many astronomers: some of the ultra-modern observatories are open to visitors, too.
Not far from the Silver City, Copiapó, are the solitary beaches of Bahía Inglesa and the wild expansions of the Nevado Tres Cruces National Park in the upper Andes, are home to the highest volcano in the world, the Ojos del Salado (6,893 m).
The seaside resort La Serena tempts you with true Andalusian charm. From here it's not far to the green valley of the Elqui river, where wine and papayas thrive in abundance. Lots of sun-worshippers, mystics and UFO-faithfuls swear by the magical atmosphere of the Valle del Elqui.
