Seduction at the end of the world

The saying goes that God ordered the angels to dump all the remnants of his creation behind a long embankment - the Andes - and thus Chile was born. A country with rainforests and volcanoes, with colourful lagoons, glacier fields and silent high plateaus, with copper mountains, waterfalls and fjords, with deserts and ice fields. A long, small stretch of land, "where the world ends", as the Aymara Indians say.

Chile stretches for a colossal 4,225 km between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, but is a mere 80 km wide at its narrowest part and only 400 km at its widest part. Transposed to Europe, Chile would stretch all the way from Norway down to Tunisia on the African continent - some 4,000 kilometres. This elongation means that Chile covers almost all climate zones and dazzles visitors with an enormous diversity - a land of total contrasts. The driest desert on earth gives the North of Chile its characteristic appearance. The vibrant metropolis Santiago with a population of 5 million dominates Chile's central region, exuding a Mediterranean flair and climate. The so-called 'Small South' is full of luscious succulent green vegetation and further down south - at the uttermost end of the Earth - Patagonia with its dramatic geography and the eternal ice of the glaciers simply takes one's breath away. The Andes mountain chain runs through the whole length of the country, imposing its beauty, while a tropical wind gently caresses the Easter Island.
